Generation of Gravity-Capillary Wind Waves by Instability of a Coupled Shear-Flow

چکیده

The theory of surface wave generation, in viscous flows, is modified by replacing the linear-logarithmic shear velocity profile, air, with a model which links smoothly linear and logarithmic layers through buffer layer. This profile includes effects air flow turbulence using damped mixing-length model. In water, an exponential used. It shown that this coupled shear-velocity gives better agreement experimental data than linear-logarithmic, non smooth (in air)–exponential water), widely used literature. We also give new insights on retrograde modes are Doppler shifted at air-sea interface, namely threshold value current for occurrence second unstable mode.

Generation of surface waves by shear-flow instability

We consider the linear stability of an inviscid parallel shear flow of air over water with gravity and capillarity. The velocity profile in the air is monotonically increasing upwards from the sea surface and is convex, while the velocity in the water is monotonically decreasing from the surface and is concave. An archetypical example, the ‘double-exponential’ profile, is solved analytically an...

Generation of ripples by shear - flow instability

We consider the linear stability of a monotonically decreasing, concave shear flow beneath a free surface with gravity and capillarity. An archetypical example, with current U = U0 exp(z/h), is solved analytically and studied in detail. Comparison with several other smooth velocity profiles indicates that the exponential profile is representative of all smooth monotonic concave velocity profile...

Suppression of thermally excited capillary waves by shear flow.

We investigate the thermal fluctuations of the colloidal gas-liquid interface subjected to a shear flow parallel to the interface. Strikingly, we find that the shear strongly suppresses capillary waves, making the interface smoother. This phenomenon can be described by introducing an effective interfacial tension that increases with the shear rate. The increase of sigma(eff) is a direct consequ...

Shear flow generation by drift waves revisited

The generation of shear flow by drift waves is an important area of investigation. In a recent paper @Chen et al., Phys. Plasmas 7, 3129 ~2000!# an elegant formalism was developed for the generation of shear/zonal flows by drift waves in a toroidal plasma. The study of shear flow generation in fluids and plasmas is put into perspective. In this paper it is shown how a simple slab geometry analy...

Transverse instability of gravity-capillary line solitary water waves

The gravity-capillary water-wave problem concerns the irrotational flow of a perfect fluid in a domain bounded below by a rigid bottom and above by a free surface under the influence of gravity and surface tension. In the case of large surface tension the system has a travelling line solitary-wave solution for which the free surface has a localised profile in the direction of propagation and is...
